Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)

What would it mean to your organization if your customers have a very high confidence level regarding your capabilities and quality of products?

Quality management system (QMS) standards include direct references to PPAP. Please refer to the following documents:

  • ISO/TS 16949:2009, Page 20, Clause 7.3.6.3: Product approval process

PPAP defines generic requirements for production part approval, including production and bulk materials. The purpose of PPAP is to determine if all customer engineering record and specification requirements are properly understood by the supplier (the organization) and that the processes have the potential to produce product consistently meeting these requirements during an actual production run at the quoted production rate.

Some of the benefits of PPAP:

  • Enhanced customer confidence in the supplier's capabilities
  • Consistent approach in assuring quality and providing evidence
  • Elimination of non-value added activities such as receiving inspection
  • Continued emphasis on assessing the impact of product and process changes

Jan Roovers Associates, Inc. has trained hundreds of design and process engineers as well as people in manufacturing and quality control in the development and application of PPAP. We encourage our course participants to bring their PPAP documents to the course. Our willingness to review and discuss these documents has earned us very positive feedback.

Our most requested arrangement is the 0.5-day PPAP introduction course combined with our 1-day APQP and 1.5-day FMEA courses. These courses are geared (as much as reasonably possible) towards the specific needs and expectations of the participants. Small group discussions and customized (company-specific) exercises are used to help participants internalize, and immediately apply what has been taught.
